Why Women Leave Men

I recently learned that in college-educated couples, 90% of all divorces are initiated by women.

Pretty shocking, right?

This statistic raises the question: why do women leave men?

I have a theory, but before I delve into it, let's clarify something.

Just because women initiate divorce more often than men doesn't necessarily mean that men are happy in those relationships. It takes two to tango, and I believe many of these men were anticipating the inevitable.

Men just deal with unhappiness differently than women.

At the risk of a massive generalization, women feel all the emotions, and men tend to compartmentalize and numb themselves out.

You know what I mean. You probably even do it yourself sometimes.

It's easier to turn on a game and put back a few crispy boys than it is to deal with feelings of frustration and unhappiness in your life.

Is alcohol not your drug of choice? Maybe it's long hours at work or video games to help you turn your mind off.

I’ll share a quick story to explain what I mean.

One of my best friends in college caddied during the summers to make some extra cash.

Every Saturday and Sunday for the entire summer, he'd be booked for four rounds with "Mr. Paulson." Mr. Paulson would get there early and play two rounds of golf on Saturday and two rounds on Sunday.

They didn't talk much, and frankly, that's how Mr. Paulson liked it.

One day, my friend decided to muster up some courage and ask him why he spent so much time at the country club.

"Mr. Paulson, you've played four rounds every weekend for the last three months. When did you realize you loved golf so much?"

His response: "Well, Pete, you've got it all wrong. I don't play four rounds a weekend because I love golf. I play four rounds every weekend because I hate my wife."

Now, let’s get back to my theory.

If you look at the study, the top three reasons women divorce men are:

  1. Infidelity

  2. Incompatibility

  3. Drug and Alcohol use

However, these answers only scratch the surface. These “reasons for divorce” are merely symptoms of deeper underlying problems.

Men who are happy in their marriage generally don’t cheat (with exceptions) and men who feel connected to their purpose don’t drink themselves stupid (again, with exceptions).

Infidelity and drug and alcohol use are coping mechanisms for men who want to feel something different than what they currently feel. Incompatibility” is often a subtle way of saying, “You no longer inspire me”.

Women leave men who prioritize comfort over the feeling of being alive.

Women possess a heightened intuition and can sense when a man has lost his inner spark. This can be confusing for men, as we strive to be providers and do everything right, yet our partners often remain unsatisfied.

The truth is, in our pursuit to provide we often neglect to choose ourselves. We fail to fill our own cups and pursue the things that make us feel truly alive. Are you guilty of that? I know I am.

Consider the analogy of grey wolves and domesticated dogs. They share 98% of their DNA, yet dogs have been tamed. However, have you ever witnessed a dog capturing a squirrel? They transform from cuddly couch potatoes into a fierce hunter in an instant. A dog's pride after a successful kill is unmatched. Men aren't so different. We crave challenges, novelty, competition, and adventure.

Unfortunately, those urges are at odds with the needs of modern society. Society prefers to see us tamed and compliant, confined behind desks and ordering takeout.

At the risk of yet another animal metaphor, our society wants us declawed.

But that's not what women want. Women are attracted to men who are ALIVE with passion flowing through their veins. While they may not always articulate it, that's what they want.

Unlike men, women cannot easily numb themselves or compartmentalize their lives. When men feel flat and uninspired, women sense it too, possibly even before men fully grasp what's happening.

This is why women leave men. They leave men who have forsaken their dreams for stability, not because they disdain stability, but because they can no longer bear witnessing their partner's diminished presence in the world after losing their passion.

The Weekly Savage:

This week’s featured savage is England’s own Russ Cook aka “Hardest Geezer”.

Every day he posts a video that gets me fired up and reminds me the challenges I face in my life are more trivial in nature.

I highly recommend following his journey on Twitter.

The stats:

Russ is attempting to run 15,000km (or 360 marathons) in just 240 days.
